An initial consultation with an interventional radiologist is an important first step. The interventional radiologist will need to obtain a detailed gynecologic history and review results of imaging examinations such as ultrasound or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) that were used to diagnose your fibroids. After discussing your health history and reviewing the various test results, the doctor will be able to determine whether you are a candidate for the procedure. This is also an opportunity for you to ask the doctor questions about the procedure.

Sometimes more tests are necessary to determine whether UFE is the right choice for your condition. UFE should not be performed when there is an active pelvic infection or if a gynecologic cancer is present. Your interventional radiologist may order further blood tests, recommend a biopsy or order an MRI examination if one has not been obtained. If you and the interventional radiologist determine to go ahead with the UFE procedure, the next step would be to obtain authorization from your insurance company.
